about

The basic tracks for this 20-minute EP were recorded live on Sunday 10th October 2021 at Polemic Music Studios, Hidcote Road, Oadby. The spoken sections were recorded on an iPhone X during March of the following year, with the final edit approved and mastered on Saturday 5th March 2022. (Thank God for that... this bastard has taken forever to finish.)

When the Breakfast Club Improv Band began this recording project, Europe, specifically Russia and Ukraine, was not at war. But since then Russian tanks have rolled in and obliterated cities, killing many civilians in the process. As I write, families are fleeing their homes leaving everything behind. Crossing the boarders into Poland and Hungary, the children are in a state of utter shock, their mothers left fearing what the future may bring, their fathers - who where just ordinary dads just weeks ago - remain behind, now serving as freedom fighters armed with Kalashnikovs.

Freedom in Europe hasn't felt this fragile for decades. It will therefore come as no surprise that the music presented here has been influenced by the recent turmoil in Ukraine. In some ways it presents two simultaneous realities. Life in the UK carries on as normal (for now at least... although it's becoming increasingly more expensive). Alpho and Nano have been largely protected from the horrors depicted on the news; they still laugh and sing songs about poo and think about coding computer games.

The Breakfast Club Improv Band stands with the people of Ukraine and the brave anti-war Russians who have voiced their opposition (at great risk to themselves) to the horrific actions of their political leaders. Quite frankly, FUCK PUTIN.

about

Richard Hemmings / Evil Dick / Breakfast Club Improv band Leicester, UK

Composer Evil Dick is a violent, abusive control freak. He is psychotic, given to totally contradicting himself. He is self- obsessed, which is not surprising because he is also incredibly dull (anyone heard his "coloured
dots" monologue?). He is prone to bouts of extreme grumpiness, especially in bed, when any kind of sound, including his own breathing sends him into a rage.
